Douglas Shire Council will postpone its Port Douglas Australia Day event due to flooding and forecast heavy rainfall.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting intense rainfall that may bring rainfall totals of up to 250mm tomorrow.
Flash flooding will make it difficult for attendees from outlying areas to make it to the ceremony and poses an unnecessary risk to these people.
Council does not want any attendees to feel the pressure of driving in potentially unsafe conditions and is encouraging everyone to limit non-essential travel.
Australia Day Award nominees will be notified of the cancellation and a suitable date will be organized for future weeks.
A Citizenship Ceremony will be held at 9am on Thursday, February 21 at the Port Douglas Community Hall.
Council is encouraging everyone to stay safe and follow the Douglas Dashboard for BOM updates, road conditions and flood cameras.
