How do I obtain approval to build or re-fit a food shop?
Any person wanting to build a new food shop or re-fit an existing one must lodge an application to construct and fit-out and lodge it with the Environmental Health & Regulatory Services Unit. Two copies of plans and specifications must accompany the application. No work is to commence until the Unit has issued a letter of approval.
How long will it take to obtain approval to build or re-fit a food shop?
Once you have lodged your application to construct and fit out with the Environmental Health & Regulatory Services Unit, you should allow at least four (4) weeks for Environmental Officers to assess your plans and send you a letter of approval. No work on the food shop is to commence until the Unit has issued a letter of approval.
How long will it take for a sale search / land record search to be carried out?
You should allow a minimum of ten (10) working days for the search inspection to be carried out. A report of findings from the search will be sent to the person lodging the application for the search and the current business operator/s after this inspection.
Do I need a permit to hold a sausage sizzle?
If you belong to a non-profit organisation and you are holding the sausage sizzle as a fundraising event, then you do not need a permit. You must however ensure that you comply with the food safety standards. (A non-profit organisation includes charities, cultural, educational, political, social welfare, sporting and recreational groups.)
Can I make food from home to sell in shops, at markets or school fetes?
