Local Laws Officers have increased patrols around the Douglas Shire, specifically targeting dogs being walked without a lead.
It is a requirement to walk your dog on a lead whenever you are outside your own property, including taking your dog to and from a vehicle.
People often think that their dog will stay with them when they are off a lead or readily respond to voice commands, but dogs can become anxious, scared or spooked, or just want to play with other dogs.
Dog owners can walk their pets without a leash at the southern end of Four Mile Beach, south of Martin Scullett Drive. All other areas require a leash.
Local laws thanks those residents doing the right thing and who are setting the example for responsible dog ownership.
