Douglas Shire Council has shown its support for the local tourism industry by providing at least $430,000 for Tourism Port Douglas Daintree for the next three years.
Mayor Julia Leu said Council’s funding agreement provided certainty for TPDD to further develop and implement its strategies for the destination marketing of the Douglas region.
“Tourism Port Douglas Daintree does an incredible job promoting the Douglas Shire to a national and international audience through traditional and social media and industry trade shows both here and abroad,” Mayor Leu said.
“As a Local Tourism Organisation, TPDD punches well above its weight and leverages the funding it does receive as well as any LTO in Australia to ensure it can be involved in campaigns with Tourism Australia and Tourism and Events Queensland.”
At its Ordinary Council Meeting on July 15, Council also announced its support for the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival with a proposed $5000 cash sponsorship and $5000 in-kind.
“The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival is a fabulous addition to the local events calendar, particularly as it attracts competitors and their supporters from around the world to the Douglas Shire outside the peak tourism season,” Mayor Leu said.
“Sports tourism continues to grow and the uniqueness of the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival course makes it stand out from the crowd, much like the Douglas Shire’s tourism industry as a whole.”
