Local legends will be celebrated and new citizens welcomed at a tropical Australia Day Awards ceremony in Port Douglas on Sunday, 26 January, 2020.

Douglas Shire Council is encouraging locals to come down to the Port Douglas Community Hall from 7.30am for the free BBQ breakfast.

Council will welcome 28 new citizens at a citizenship ceremony starting at 9.30am.

Council’s annual Australia Day Awards will commence at 10am recognising the actions and abilities of groups and individuals that have enhanced the social connectivity of our community through personal contribution or through an event that has added value and enjoyment to the lives of others.

Douglas Shire residents and community groups are encouraged to nominate a dedicated citizen deserving of recognition for the 2020 Australia Day Awards.

The seven award categories for 2020 are:

  1. Citizen of the Year recognises outstanding members of the community for their personal endeavours, achievements and community involvement;
  2. Young Citizen of the Year recognises young citizens aged 25 years or under (on 26 January 2019) for their personal endeavours, achievements and community involvement;
  3. Volunteer of the Year recognises members of the community of any age making significant and lasting contributions to the social, recreational, environmental and economic quality of life in the community through their endeavours on behalf of individuals, organisations, charities, service groups, clubs, churches, sporting groups, health or youth.
  4. Arts and Cultural Award recognises members of the community of any age making significant and lasting contributions to arts and culture in the community.
  5. Environmental Achievement Award recognises members of the community of any age making significant and lasting contributions to the environment.
  6. Senior Sports Award recognises sports people for their personal endeavours and achievements in their sporting code.
  7. Junior Sports Award (Aged 18 years or under at 26 January 2019) recognises young sports people for their personal endeavours and achievements in their sporting code.
