Douglas gardeners have until 25 August to enter their garden in the first Douglas Shire Garden Awards.
“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the hard work and loving care that our people give to their gardens,” Douglas Shire Council Mayor, Julia Leu, said.
“In keeping with the diverse nature of our region, we are seeking a wide range of gardens from a range of categories, including residential, acreage, edible, sustainable, school and childcare centres and professional gardeners working at resorts, businesses and private homes,” Mayor Leu said.
Gardens will be judged by ABC Gardening Australia guru Costa Georgiadis, the Mayor and a Council Open Space officer.
“Our judges are looking for beautiful well-designed gardens that demonstrate creativity and good practices such as being waterwise, managing pests and recycling materials,” the Mayor said.
“Judges will look at how our gardeners use plantings and design including balance, colour, natives and plant health. Original and creative gardens will be well received.
“Local businesses have shown their support for the awards through sponsorship in the form of product, service, vouchers or cash. Special thanks to Mossman Botanic Garden, Raw & More, Papillon Landscapes, Newsport, Ghost Gum Gardening & Irrigation and All Figured Out.
“The competition closes on 25 August, with judging on 13-14 September. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday 15 September,” Mayor Leu said.
