Proposal to Install New Amenities in Rotary Park
Douglas Shire Council is considering replacing the single toilet in Rotary Park with four toilets —two unisex toilets, one ambulant unisex toilet and one unisex accessible toilet.
An ambulant toilet offers some accessible features such as a higher toilet pan, grab rails, lever taps/ paddle flush, an outward-opening door and an emergency call bell – but they don’t have enough space to accommodate a wheelchair.
An accessible toilet includes all the above plus shelves for colostomy users, a lowered basin and mirror, and a turning circle large enough for a wheelchair user to enter, turn, reverse alongside the toilet and exit comfortably.
This will improve the level of service offered and responds to feedback from retailers along Macrossan Street who say visitors are always seeking out amenities, and having more available would be a good thing.
The footprint within Rotary Park will be larger and one of the tables and chairs in the park will need to be moved.
The existing pathway will lead to the new building – concept only at this stage.
