YOUNG swimmers have a chance to improve their skills and confidence in the water when a new Learn-To-Swim program kicks off next month.

Douglas Shire Council has announced a nine-week program following the initial success of the intensive school holiday program at the Mossman Pool.

The program, which starts on Monday February 3, is open to everyone from babies to adults.

The 30-minute classes are scheduled weekly for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, featuring a variety of morning and afternoon sessions.

Douglas Shire Council Mayor Julia Leu said the Learn-to-Swim program was great excuse to get in the water and cool off this summer.

“Swimming lessons are a great way for young children and adults to pick up the necessary skills and build confidence in the water,” she said.

“Council is keen to encourage active lifestyles and believes that having the ability to swim confidently gives people the best opportunity to enjoy living in the Douglas Shire.

“Since taking over the operation of the Mossman Pool, Council has activated the facility by installing BBQ areas, screening Dive-in-Movies and launching the recent intensive school holiday swimming program, which has been well attended.”

The 2019 Royal Lifesaving National Drowning Report highlighted the importance of strong swimming ability, revealing a 10% in drowning deaths from the previous year.

Interested participants can register their details at the Mossman Pool page on Council’s website, or call the pool staff on 07 4098 2627 or 0417 768 266.
