“Let It Grow” is the motto for Council’s inaugural Douglas Garden Awards which will be officially launched next month.
Mayor Julia Leu said the Douglas Garden Awards will support and encourage aspiring and established gardeners to participate in the competition, providing an opportunity to showcase their gardening talents as well as further improving the beauty and attractiveness of the Shire.
“The ‘Let It Grow – Douglas Garden Awards’ is a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to present their gardens and gain recognition for the passion and dedication to gardening and creating beautiful environments throughout the Douglas Shire,” Mayor Leu said.
“We have so many passionate and creative green thumbs here in Douglas, so it is hoped that the awards encourage an even greater feeling of pride in our towns and further improve the beauty and attractiveness of our area, for locals and those considering moving here permanently”.
Categories will include Residential Garden for regular homes, Acreage Garden for large properties, Edible Garden for those that produce fresh, edible produce and Sustainable Garden for innovative gardens incorporating sustainable environmental initiatives.
There will also be a Professional Gardener category for resorts, businesses and homes established or maintained by a professional gardener and a category for school or childcare centres.
Entries will officially open on 1 July to ensure gardeners have sufficient time to prepare their lush gardens, with judging in mid-September.
Council will seek additional sponsorship of the Awards in the coming months.
