Council to investigate Daintree ferry priority lane
Douglas Shire Council will investigate options and costs for a priority lane during peak times on the northern side of the Daintree River ferry access point. Daintree locals requested Council look into the feasibility of a priority lane during peak times. A report on the feasibility of a priority lane will be presented to Council at a later date.
Green light to seek Woolworths site traffic study
Douglas Shire Council will write to the Department of Transport and Main Roads requesting a copy of the traffic study undertaken to determine projected vehicular movements at the new Woolworths site. The DTMR approved traffic lights for the intersection at the request of developer Town and Country in January despite widespread opposition from the community and Council.
Change of date for April Ordinary Meeting
Douglas Shire Council yesterday voted to change the date of the Ordinary Meeting scheduled for April 22 to April 29. The change was made to accommodate the Easter long weekend on April 21 to provide additional time for effective agenda preparation.
Mayor nominated for LGAQ executive
Douglas Shire Council yesterday nominated Mayor Julia Leu as a candidate for election to the casual vacancy of the Local Government Association of Queensland Executive Representative for District 10 (Far North). The association called for nominations following the resignation from the policy executive of Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning.
Approval given for Mossman Gorge Centre fee increase
Douglas Shire Council yesterday voted to give approval to the Indigenous Land Corporation, operator of the Mossman Gorge Centre, to increase the fee for the shuttle service to Mossman Gorge from $6 per adult and $3 per child to $8.50 and $4.25 respectively. Residents of the Douglas Shire will continue to have free access through the Centre to Mossman Gorge.
Mayor, Deputy Mayor nominated for RADF Committee
Mayor Julia Leu and Deputy Mayor Abigail Noli were yesterday nominated to be a part of the Regional Arts Development Fund Committee. Douglas Shire Council gave a unanimous endorsement to participate in the RDAF program. The RADF is a partnership between the State Government, through Arts Queensland, and local governments. The program supports the professional development of artists and arts practitioners in regional Queensland. A volunteer committee including five community members will be formed reflecting the diverse culture and geography of the Douglas Shire.
Murphy St request to extend period of approval refused
Douglas Shire Council yesterday voted to refuse a request to extend the period of approval to the development permit for material change of use for four dwellings located at 27 Murphy St. The request was refused on the grounds that the development approved under the development permit is inconsistent with the current Planning Scheme and planning controls. The development permit is due to expire if the use is not commenced prior to August 3, 2014.
Bloomfield Wilderness Lodge jetty approved
Douglas Shire Council yesterday voted to approve the construction of a jetty at the Bloomfield Wilderness Lodge. The replacement jetty was constructed in 2004 and at the time no approval was gained. The jetty has been certified for structural integrity and approval has been gained from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The jetty provides the only access to the lodge.
Council finances remain on track
Douglas Shire Council yesterday noted the financial report for the first two months of operations. When the variance in de-amalgamation costs and water consumption income is taken into account, the negative operating result variance of $677,920 is converted into a positive variance of $310,466. This financial report is not a statement on Council’s financial position as an accurate assessment of Council’s full financial position cannot occur until the final split of assets and liabilities between Cairns Regional Council and Douglas has been completed. This work is expected to be finalised at the end of this month.
