𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰

The Bureau of Meteorology says river rises are occurring along the Daintree River during Thursday afternoon.

Up to 180mm of rainfall has been recorded in the past 24 hours in Daintree and Mossman River catchments causing strong river level rises today.

The Daintree River at Daintree Village may reach the moderate flood level (6m) overnight Thursday into early Friday morning.

A reminder that Daintree Ferry services can be delayed during periods of high tides and heavy rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a tropical low over the central Gulf of Carpentaria will move slowly south across Far North Queensland over the next day or two.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 which may lead to 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 is expected to develop from late today and into Thursday.

Six-hourly rainfall totals between 120 and 200 mm are likely. Locally 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 which may lead to 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 is also possible, with six-hourly totals of 200 to 300 mm.

There remains significant uncertainty over the timing and location of this threat.

Mossman SES shed at the rear of Council’s Administration Building in Mossman, access via Front Street.

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐎 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐋: Please don’t overfill your bags – they only need to be filled 2/3 full and there is no need to tie the top of the bag. Douglas Shire Council is monitoring sand use and will replenish as required.

Prepare for King Tides

The Douglas Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) is encouraging residents in low-lying areas to take precautions ahead of the king tides this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also forecast rainfall with king tides predicted from Friday 17 February 2023 until Tuesday 21 February 2023.

Residents in areas that are prone to minor flooding during the tides are encouraged to move valuables and their cars to protect them from the saltwater. King tides will reach a peak of 3.41m at 9.22am on Monday.

Low lying areas, particularly around Mowbray Street in Port Douglas, may be impacted.

Daintree Ferry services can be delayed during periods of extreme high tides and heavy rainfall. Please check the Daintree Ferry website for service updates this weekend.
