The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will be improving safety on the Mossman – Daintree Road from early April 2022

The $12.4 million works are part of the Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland government. This program aims to improve safety on the state-controlled road network with locations selected based on a history of crashes and/ or key safety concerns.

The project will include shoulder widening, wide centre line treatments and intersection upgrades on the Mossman – Daintree Road at locations between Syndicate Road and the vicinity of Kylies Road.

These works will improve road safety and reduce incidents such as run off road crashes and head on crashes.

In response to community concerns about road safety between Syndicate Road and Atherton
Street, TMR will also carry out the following works:

  • Realign the Jones Street intersection and install dedicated turn lanes
  • Close Atherton Street access to Cedars Street/Mossman Daintree Road
  • Install dedicated turn lanes into Syndicate Road

As part of the works, several trees within a TMR road reserve on Mossman – Daintree Road are within the clear zone required for road safety and must be removed to meet safety standards.

TMR will consult with residents in the project area about this necessary safety measure.

The project will be carried out as a combination of day and night works. Crews will be onsite between 6 am and 6 pm for day works and between 6 pm and 6 am for night works. The project is expected to continue into mid-2022 to complete, construction and weather conditions permitting.

Nearby residents may experience temporary impacts during work hours, including noise associated with the works, such as the sound of trucks, heavy machinery and vibrations while the work is carried out.

For the safety of road users and maintenance crews, changed traffic conditions will be in place including temporary speed limit reductions, and single lane operation under coordination of traffic controllers while the works are carried out.

Road users should expect minor delays and plan their journeys accordingly. The Department would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and cooperation.
