LOCAL school students will get discounted entry into a school-based learn-to-swim program at the Mossman Pool this summer.
Douglas Shire Council resolved to reduce the entrance fee to $2 per student, saving local parents more than $30,000 in coming months.
The reduced fees will support the seven local schools to run their upcoming program.
Eligible schools include Alexandra Bay State School, Daintree State School, Miallo State School, Mossman State School, Port Douglas State School, Wonga State School and St Augustine’s Primary School.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr the lower fee would encourage more participation in school swimming programs.
“Swimming is such an important part of life in the tropics,” he said.
“We are really excited about getting more kids in the pool this summer and increasing their confidence in the water.
“Swimming lessons save lives and Council is more than happy to do our bit to encourage greater participation, while making a small difference to the cost on our Douglas parents.”
Council is now taking bookings from schools for the upcoming programs and swimming carnivals.
Staff are also getting ready for the return of the popular 10-week Aqua Fit program next week with beginner and advanced classes on offer for $15 per person per session.
The program will run from Tuesday 6 October until Wednesday 9 December, 2020.
