DOUGLAS Shire Council and  NBN Co. are building a case to apply for Federal Funding to upgrade telecommunications in Wonga Beach.

If successful, the federal funding – through the Regional Connectivity Program, will provide the infrastructure to upgrade the telecommunications service from fixed wireless to fibre to the premises (FTTP) across the main residential areas of Wonga Beach.

This upgrade will improve internet reliability and provide faster connection speeds.

The estimated project cost is approximately $5 million. This is beyond the resources of our shire – a Federal Government grant is the only way to deliver the upgrade.

If the upgrade proceeds, it is important to know that costs to residents for internet services are not expected to change from what they are now.

By demonstrating strong community support, we will have a greater chance of success – although it needs to be stressed that even with a compelling case, competition for funds is fierce and we may not be successful.
