Douglas Shire Council has shown its support for the local tourism industry by providing more than $480,000 annually for Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD) for the next three years, Douglas Shire Council Mayor, Julia Leu, said today.
Port Douglas Event Management will also receive $20,000 annually over three years from Council, to support the Tropical Journeys Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival, Mayor Leu said.
“Council’s funding agreement provides certainty for TPDD to further develop and implement its strategies for the destination marketing of the Douglas region,” the Mayor said.
“TPDD does a first class job promoting the Douglas Shire to a national and international audience through traditional and social media and industry trade shows both here and abroad.
“As a Local Tourism Organisation (LTO), TPDD enjoys an excellent reputation among its industry peers. It successfully leverages funding with industry partners to ensure it can be involved in campaigns with Tourism Australia and Tourism and Events Queensland,” she said.
At its Ordinary Council Meeting on 1 August, Council also announced its increased support for the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival with a $20,000 cash sponsorship and $10,000 in-kind each year for the next three years.
“The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival has evolved into a unique event. The number of participants has increased significantly, as people experience the benefits of a growing sports tourism focus and an active healthy lifestyle,” Mayor Leu said.
“Council recognises the significant economic value created through the provision of funding to both organisations and the promotion of the range of activities that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” Mayor Leu said.
