Coastal rehabilitation works at Newell Beach

Council will begin interim coastal rehabilitation works at the southern end of Newell Beach in late January to help stabilise the shoreline following erosion caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

What’s happening?
Sand scraping will take place as an interim measure. This involves moving sand from the Marine Safety Qld nourishment area at the Southern end of the beach to help rebuild the natural dune profile and reduce erosion risk.
Works are scheduled to start late January and are expected to finish before the large tides forecast for early February.

Why are we doing this?
These works are part of the Coastal Recovery Program, funded through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) by the Australian and Queensland Governments. The program focuses on nature-based solutions to support long-term coastal recovery.

What does this mean for you?
Access to the southern end of Newell Beach may be temporarily restricted for safety during the works. Please follow all signage and directions from work crews. The works are expected to take a couple of days to complete.

The package is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments to support Queensland communities in their recovery from the Tropical Cyclone Jasper, Associated Rainfall and Flooding, 13 – 28 December 2023 event.
