Kerbside Collection

Weekly general rubbish and fortnightly recycling collections are provided to properties within Council’s kerbside collection service area.

On your collection day, please ensure your bins are placed on the kerb by 6am.

Face the lid openings to the road, no more than a metre from the kerb edge and at least one metre apart when there is more than one bin.

Bins should be removed from the kerb within 12 hours to prevent damage or theft.

Large domestic items, commercial, industrial and hazardous waste should not be put in the kerbside wheelie bins. These items must be disposed of at an appropriate Transfer Station.

General Waste Bin (Green or Red Lid)

Red is the national standard for general waste bins and green lids are slowly being phased out in the Douglas Shire.

All new bins issued will have red lids and any green lids which are broken will be replaced with red lids.

ONLY new bins and bins that require replacement will be issued with the red lids.

*PLEASE NOTE – this is not a mass changeover of lids and properties are not required to do anything.

General waste bins for residential households are collected on a weekly basis in areas within Council’s kerbside collection service area.

The following items should be placed in your general waste bin:

  • Aluminium Foil
  • Clothing and fabrics
  • Waxed cardboard
  • Plastic bags
  • Disposable coffee cups
  • Polystyrene/Styrofoam
  • Cling Film/Glad Wrap
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Bottle Lids
  • Nappies
  • Drinking/Wine glasses
  • Windows/plate glass or mirrors
  • Ceramics/crockery
  • Garden hose
  • Household food scraps

General waste collected via the kerbside collection service is taken to the Advanced Resource Recovery Facility, operated by SUEZ in Portsmith, Cairns, where it is processed into compost.

Any residual waste (non-organic waste that cannot be processed) is transported to landfill on the Atherton Tablelands.

For further information please visit SUEZ.

Recycling Waste Bin (Yellow Lid)

Recycling bins for residential households are collected on a fortnightly basis within Council’s kerbside collection service area. The following items should be rinsed (where applicable) and placed in your recycling bin:

  • Plastic bottles and containers e.g. soft drink and water bottles, margarine and butter tubs, buckets and plant pots, takeaway containers.
  • Glass bottles and containers e.g. alcohol and sauce bottles, glass medicine bottles
  • Paper and cardboard e.g. juice cartons, wrapping paper, magazines and newspapers
  • Steel and aluminium e.g. aerosol cans, aluminium and steel food cans, drink cans

When you place your recycling bin kerbside, the recyclable items are taken to the Materials Recovery Facility in Cairns. Items are sorted and separated into plastics, paper, steel, aluminium, glass and non-recyclables.

Recyclables are baled and transported to Brisbane and non-recyclables are sent to landfill on the Atherton Tablelands. Glass is crushed and reused by Cairns Regional Council where possible.

New residences

Council provides a general waste wheelie bin & a recycling wheelie bin for free to new residences within Council kerbside collection service area.
