Kerbside Collection Overview

Weekly general waste and fortnightly recycling collections are provided to properties within Council’s kerbside collection service area.

Are you presenting your bin correctly?

  • Bins must be on the kerb by 6am on the morning of your collection day.
  • Bins should be 0.5 meters apart
  • Bins should be removed from the kerb within 12 hours to prevent damage or theft.

Large items, industrial and hazardous waste should not be put in wheelie bins, instead they should be taken to an appropriate Transfer Station.

Missed Services – My Bin Wasn’t Emptied

Report any missed services to Customer Service on (07) 4099 9444 within 24 hours.  Please wait until 1:00pm before reporting a missed service as the bin truck may be running late.  If your bin wasn’t presented correctly fees may apply, payment can only be made via one of Council’s approved payment methods.

Repairing, Replacing & Stolen Wheelie Bins

Parts of wheelie bins can be repaired or replaced if required, this includes the lid, wheels, pins and axles.  If the bin is irreparable it will be replaced.  If your bin requires repair or replacement please complete the RM01-Replacement of Bins form.

Bins must be left kerbside as soon as the request is made, as the bin will usually be inspected and repaired or replaced within 48 hours.

If your bin has been stolen please report this to the Customer Service Team on (07) 4099 9444 within 24 hours.

New residences

Council provides a general waste wheelie bin & a recycling wheelie bin for free to new residences within Council kerbside collection service area.

Residents can request a new waste and recycling service once a final building certificate is registered with Council’s Building Section.

Requests can be made by completing the form for a New Cleansing Service and emailing it to enquiries@douglas.qld.gov.au. New bins will be delivered to the property within two days of the request.

Residents are urged to communicate with their builders, or a Private Building Certifier, to ensure the appropriate Building Application and Final Certificate is sent to Council.

Additional Wheelie Bin Entitlement

Residential properties can request an additional cleansing service which is added onto rates notices as an additional charge.  This entitles the property to one additional waste wheelie bin and one additional recycling wheelie bin.  Requests can be made by completing the RM02-New and Additional Cleansing Service form.

Residential properties can also request a one-off return service by calling Customer Service on (07) 4099 9444.  Fees apply and can only be made via one of Council’s approved payment methods.

Due to anti-competitive legislation, Council is unable to offer Commercial properties additional wheelie bin entitlements.  Arrangements for additional services should be made with a private waste provider.

Change of Service

Larger properties, such as Multi Unit Dwellings and Commercial properties may be able to request less wheelie bins with an increased servicing frequency per week.  This is useful for properties with limited bin storage space.  Council works with its kerbside contractor to accommodate requests where practical.  To request a change in service please contact Customer Service on (07) 4099 9444.

Fees and Charges

Wheelie bin service fees and charges can be found within Council’s Schedule of Fees and Charges under the ‘Resource Management’ heading.

There’s a New Lid on the Block

New general waste wheelie bins will be issued with a red lid, the national standard.  Green lids are slowly being phased out in the Douglas Shire.
