Community Garage Sale

Community-wide reuse initiatives delivered by Douglas Shire Council to encourage residents to extend the life of clothing and household items by reusing and repurposing, keeping valuable materials in circulation and preventing them going to landfill. Combining Community Garage Sale events with Thrifted Threads fashion focused events Council aims to make it easy for residents to give their pre-loved items a second life. It’s a fun and practical way to reduce waste, support the circular economy, keep valuable materials out of landfill and make reuse the norm.

Douglas Shire Council is proud to launch the Giant Community Garage Sale, a community-wide reuse initiative that makes it easy for residents to give their pre-loved items a second life.

Join us at our centralised garage sale where our local community will be setting up stalls in one convenient location to sell their pre-loved items.

It’s a fun and practical way to reduce waste, support the circular economy, and keep valuable materials out of landfill.

Join for a morning of family fun with a variety of activities like food stalls, petting zoo, jumping castles, games, craft stalls, roaming Wildlife Habitat display and waste workshops!

When is it happening?

Giant Community Garage Sale takes place on the 8th of November, from 8am to 12 noon.

Who is the event for?

The Giant Community Garage Sale is for everyone in the community. For households it’s a great way to declutter and make some money, while community groups, charities and schools can also jump on board to fundraise with a stall.

Why is council getting involved?

The Giant Community Garage Sale is being provided to residents as part of council’s commitment to reducing waste to landfill and to help residents reuse and reduce waste at home.

The event also helps residents make or save money by buying or selling pre-loved items

What other activities will be available on the day?

We have planned a fabulous family day out which includes:

  • Free facepainting
  • Free craft stall for the children
  • Free jumping castle and games
  • Free petting zoo
  • Free Wildlife Habitat Roaming Display
  • Free organic waste workshop
  • School Waste To Wonder Art exhibition
  • Sausage Sizzle (paid)
  • Coffee van (paid)
  • Icecream Van (paid)

What is the ‘Garage Sale Trail’?

Garage Sale Trail is run by an Australian not-for-profit, called Garage Sale Trail Foundation, in partnership with more than 90 councils across Australia.

What can I sell at my stall?

Stallholders must not sell, any of the following prohibited items: (a) Any banned, illegal or restricted products; (b) Offensive, explicit or hard-core clothing or other items; (c) Alcoholic beverages of any kind; (d) Secondhand electrical items and tools; (e) Food; (f) Toys; (g) E-cigarettes and electronic vaping devices; (h) Bicycles, skateboards, skates, roller skates/blades, scooters and associated protective equipment; (i) Inflatable pools, life jackets, floating devices and other floating aids; (j) Protective or safety equipment and/or clothing/eyeware; (k) Automotive parts/accessories of any nature; (l) Sporting goods/equipment; (m) Swords, spears, bows, crossbows, firearms; (n) Knives, not including chef/kitchen knives or garden pruning equipment; (o) Nutraceuticals or cosmetics; (p) Any medical device or alternative therapy medical advice including any massage device; (q) Detergents and/or soaps; (r) Candles of any description including the burning or heating by flame of oils/essences; (s) Children’s toys and cubby houses; (t) Baby/infant/children’s clothing; (u) Flammable items; (v) Animal feed, pet food or pet food supplements; (w) Any other item that the Event Organiser, acting reasonably, considers to be a prohibited item

What time is it on?

The event starts at 8am and runs until 12 noon.

What does it cost?

Stallholder fee is $30 plus a 2% processing fee.

Entry into the event on the day is free for everyone

I don’t want to host a stall. Can I still get involved?

Join us on the day; we will have loads of food and activities for everyone to enjoy.

Do I get a free seller pack?

Yes! Once you register to be a stallholder a Stallholder Kit will be emailed to you. Check spam for the email if it has not been received.

Who gets the money raised?

The money made from the sale of items at the event is the stallholders.

The stallholder fee ($30 plus processing fee) collected by Council is used to cover stallholder insurance and staff wages

I can no longer participate. How do I cancel my stall?

Please lodge your cancellation 7 days prior to the event (8th of Nov) via email enquiries@douglas.qld.gov.au

Are pets allowed?

No, this event is pet free

How many stallholder places are available? What stall will I get?

A maximum of 45 places stallholder places are available, see the map. Stalls will be allocated to stallholders on the day.
