Starting in September, Council will undertake the widening of two localised narrow sections on Alexandra Range.

These are located at Fern Gully, just south of the Alexandra Range Lookout.

Works were originally planned for late last year but were delayed by Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Council has now awarded a Contract to Cairns based Company Geo-Construct Pty Ltd who are currently undertaking other slip repair works on the range nearby.

Construction is expected to commence in early September and be completed by December. As preparatory work, Council has transplanted the critical King Fern in photo further downhill, out of the way of the construction footprint.

During construction, single-lane one-way traffic control will be in place so motorists should allow for some delays.

The total cost of the two projects is approximately $1.0M. Funding is being provided by the State Government under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and also by the Federal Government – Building Australia under the LRCI4 Program.

The works involve widening the pavement to a full two lanes and the provision of guardrail, improving safety for both locals and tourists.
