Open for business

By September 8, 2025No Comments

There isn’t a business in the Douglas Shire that wasn’t impacted during TC Jasper. Road and airport closers kept visitors away, ongoing rainfall kept locals busy securing their properties and then came the flooding -and weeks of disruption that followed.

Now, 18 months on from the wet, Douglas Shire is boasting in increase in business registrations.

“Our businesses have done it tough, but they are resilient and work together to support each other,” said Liz Schibig, Tourism and Economic Development Officer, Douglas Shire Council.

Having operated a successful tourism business in Port Douglas for over a decade, Liz has recently joined council bringing a wealth of experience and insight -not to mention passion.

Do it in Douglas, continues to be a successful recovery campaign aimed at promoting the shire as a place to live, work and play. The tag line, ‘Where lifelstye meets liveability’ says it all. The campaign also boasts a concierge service providing local businesses with key resources, local case studies, talent directories, and networking opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.

Another positive recovery support for local businesses is Douglas Shire Council’s ongoing commitment to being a ‘Small Business Friendly Council’. The program aims to enhance the operating environment for small businesses by reducing red tape and helping to provide opportunities they need to thrive.

Do It In Douglas is a collaboration between Douglas Shire Council, Douglas Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Port Douglas Daintree. The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
