Water Main Repair Works, Tree Removal and Water Supply Interruption

Douglas Shire Council advises that works will be undertaken to repair a water main leak near Dreamcatcher Apartments, 26–28 Reef Street, Port Douglas, on the Baler Street frontage. To allow safe access to the damaged water main, four trees will need to be removed from the verge area.

Important – Water supply interruption

Properties on Helmut Street, Baler Street and Cowrie Street will be without water on Wednesday 1 April 2026 from 9.00am to approximately 3.00pm.
Residents are encouraged to prepare in advance by setting aside water for drinking and household use.

What’s happening

Council will be undertaking tree removal and water main repair works at this location.

The works are scheduled as follows:

• Tuesday 31 March: Tree reduction and root cutting from 7.00am
• Wednesday 1 April: Water isolation from 9.00am to approximately 3.00pm to allow excavation of tree stumps and roots, expose the water main and complete the repair

During the water isolation, properties on Helmut Street, Baler Street and Cowrie Street will be without water.

Why this work is needed

A water main leak has been identified beneath this location. The pipe cannot be safely accessed or repaired without removing trees growing directly above the asset.

Trees being removed

Four trees located within the verge/road reserve on the Baler Street side will be removed. These trees are positioned directly over the water main alignment and within the excavation area.

What to expect

Residents and road users may experience:

• a temporary water interruption on Wednesday 1 April from 9.00am to approximately 3.00pm for properties on Helmut Street, Baler Street and Cowrie Street
• noise from machinery and tree removal works
• minor traffic or access impacts in the immediate area
• workers and equipment operating on site during the works

After the works

The area will be reinstated following completion of the repair works. Suitable replacement trees will be planted once the works have been completed.
