Douglas Shire Council has committed over $70 million to roads and transport projects across the shire as part of its multi‑year capital works program.

More than $32.2 million of that investment will be delivered in 2026–27, with major works focused on strengthening key parts of the network and completing complex reconstruction projects that have been underway following Cyclone Jasper.

The 2026–27 program includes major reconstruction and repair projects such as:

  • Noah Range landslip repairs
  • Noah Creek Bridge construction
  • Taylors Crossing repairs
  • Daintree Ferry landslide landside infrastructure

These projects will be jointly funded by Australian and Queensland governments, and Douglas Shire Council through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

The $1.26m Upper Cassowary Road Rehabilitation and Widening will be jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery Program will begin this financial year (R2R $985,960 and Council $270,000).

The $880,000 Warner Street kerb and channel renewal is a Council-funded project.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the scale of investment reflects the importance of maintaining safe, reliable access across the shire.

“I want to thank the Australian and Queensland Governments for supporting these major reconstruction projects. The landside infrastructure for the Daintree Ferry, the new Noah Creek Bridge and the Noah Range landslip works are not everyday road jobs — they’re complex, high‑value projects that will make a real difference for locals, visitors and businesses,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

She said the investment would help ensure the shire is better prepared for future wet seasons and ongoing recovery.

“People rely on these connections for work, school, supplies and tourism. Completing these major projects means our community will have a stronger, more resilient network for the years ahead.”
