Location: Beside the playground, Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas
Scheduled commencement: Monday 9 November 2026
Expected completion: Thursday 12 November with clean up completed before the weekend, subject to conditions.
Douglas Shire Council is preparing to proceed with removing the mature fig tree beside the playground at Rex Smeal Park. This follows the applicant’s decision to discontinue legal proceedings challenging the proposed removal.
Council recognises the tree is a valued feature of the park. The decision to remove it was not taken lightly and follows ongoing monitoring, efforts to improve its health and independent arborist advice about its deteriorating condition.
Why removal is necessary
Council has monitored the tree for several months. Several branches were removed in mid-2025 as a precaution after signs of decline were identified.
Despite these efforts, a recent assessment confirmed further deterioration and advised that the tree cannot be saved. Removal is necessary for public safety.
What to expect
Removal works are scheduled to start on Monday 9 November 2026. The works and site clean-up are expected to be completed by Thursday 12 November, subject to conditions.
While works are underway:
- The work area will be cordoned off and access restricted.
- Contractors and machinery will be operating nearby.
- Noise may be heard during tree removal.
Please stay outside the cordoned area, follow signs and directions from workers, and take the temporary restrictions into account when visiting the park or planning events.
Replacement trees and playground shade
Council is planning to transplant mature fig trees to the site and install shade sails over the playground. Further information about these works and their timing will be provided when available.
Council thanks the community for its patience and understanding while these works are undertaken.
