Location: Beside the playground, Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas
Scheduled commencement: Monday 19 October 2026
Expected completion: Before the weekend, in time for Port Shorts, subject to conditions.

Douglas Shire Council advises that the mature fig tree beside the playground at Rex Smeal Park will be removed following independent arborist assessments that identified significant structural defects, including cracking and deterioration.

Council recognises that this tree is a valued feature of the park, providing shade and contributing to its character. The decision to remove it follows ongoing monitoring, efforts to improve its health and professional advice about its deteriorating condition.

Why removal is necessary

Council has monitored the tree for several months. Several branches were removed in mid-2025 as a precaution after signs of decline were identified.

Despite these efforts, a recent assessment confirmed further deterioration and advised that the tree cannot be saved. Removal is necessary for public safety.

What to expect

The area around the tree is cordoned off from Monday 19 October 2026. Removal works are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 20 October, with works and site clean-up expected to be completed before the weekend.

During the works:

  • Access to the cordoned area will be restricted.
  • Machinery and contractors will be operating nearby.
  • Noise may be experienced during tree removal.

Council will coordinate noisy activities around a scheduled events at Little Cove.

Please remain outside the cordoned area, follow signage and directions from workers, and take the restrictions into account when visiting the park or planning events.

Replacement trees and playground shade

Council is planning to transplant mature fig trees to the site and install shade sails over the playground. Further information about these works and their timing will be provided when available.

Council thanks the community for its patience and understanding while these works are undertaken.
