The theme of the 2026 parade is ‘Ancient Wonders’, reflecting the diversity of the region, from the ancient Daintree rainforest to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
Businesses, individuals, schools and community groups are invited to bring their best float ideas to life under this theme for a chance to win in one of four prize categories, with awards ranging from $500 to $2000.
The prize categories are Best Float – overall $2000; Best Float – business $1000; Best Float – community $1000; Best Float – eco-friendly $500.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the parade is a much-anticipated Carnivale event that highlights the creativity and community spirit of the Douglas Shire.
“The Ancient Wonders theme allows our community to showcase our natural and cultural treasures and celebrate the rich stories that shape Tropical North Queensland,” she said.
“The parade brings businesses, community groups and locals together in a shared celebration of all of the things that make this part of the country special, pumping up the Carnivale action.”
Pre-parade activities commence from 5pm and include market stalls, street entertainers, carnival rides and amusements, building up to the Macrossan Street Parade, starting at 6.30pm.
The celebrations will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm, launching the evening festivities into full swing and keeping the energy alive late into the night.
Meanwhile, Savannah Sounds will be returning to Rex Smeal Park from 4pm to 10.30pm, with special guests Sneaky Sound System taking to the stage on the opening night.
“Whether you’re a business or community group showcasing your creativity on a float, or a spectator, joining in the parade fun soaking up the atmosphere, the parade is the perfect way to kick off the Carnivale weekend. It’s a true celebration of our tropical spirit,” Mayor Scomazzon said.
Parade entries close on 8 May. For more information on Port Douglas Carnivale and to register free online, visit www.carnivale.com.au.
