Ten years ago, Mossman Library embraced a bold new initiative that would transform early childhood literacy across Queensland.
As the community gathers to celebrate a decade of First 5 Forever, Judy Coulthard (former Mossman Library Team Leader, and passionate advocate for lifelong learning) looks back on the program that shaped countless young minds and strengthened family bonds.
“When First 5 Forever was introduced in 2015, it was exciting,” Judy told DSC For You & Me.
“Libraries are fun and when you add literacy and children, you’re just watching them grow. There were stories, music, and song. I looked forward to it every week; just being a kid with the kids!”
The program wasn’t just another story time. Backed by the State Library of Queensland, First 5 Forever brought resources, training and professional marketing to local libraries.
“We always had motivation,” Judy recalled.
“Combine that with State Library resources and council support, and we thrived.”
For Judy, the heart of First 5 Forever was simple: giving children the best start in life.
“The first five years are critical,” she explains.
“Kids are like little sponges and their brains are developing so fast. As a parent and as a community, we can support that.”
She added that literacy isn’t about being a perfect reader.
“Some parents think, ‘I’m not smart enough.’ But it doesn’t matter. You can still tell a story, sing to your kids, play with them, talk to them. That’s what helps them thrive.”
As Mossman prepares to celebrate the program’s 10-year milestone, Judy reflects on the joy of seeing those “little ones” grow up.
“It’s a great feeling,” she says.
“You see them in Woolies now, and they’re thriving. Those were fun times – good memories. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
“Parents are the primary supporters, but libraries are part of the community. We’re there to enhance parents’ roles and build relationships.”
On Friday, November 21, Mossman Library invites families to celebrate 10 years of First 5 Forever at Mossman Shire Hall from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
