LOCAL businesses will rub shoulders with fashion designers from places like Czech Republic and Uruguay when Eco Fashion Week Australia rolls into town next month.

Tickets are available for the nightly runway shows at the Port Douglas Community Hall that will feature 35 international designers.

EFWA Chief Executive Zuhal Kuvan-Mills said the runway shows will feature the world’s best in organic and sustainable fashion.

“The incredible response we have received clearly shows the strong growing demand for sustainable, locally made, and ethical fashion,” she said.

“It’s time to stop the sweatshops and fast fashion forever.”

EFWA will take place in Port Douglas from November 4 to 10.

Runway shows will present Australian indigenous, local and interstate designers, along with designers from Canada, England, India, Uruguay, Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Vietnam, and the Czech Republic.

A fashion gala will kick start the event that will feature community-based activities such as clothes mending workshops, an eco-market place with locally handmade goods, fashion swaps and designer showroom.

Port Douglas businesses The Beauty Room and Karmeleon are among the local businesses who are getting involved in the event.

EFWA will be attended by global media and will showcase international and Australian eco fashion designers and models.

Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said the region was thrilled to be hosting the Eco Fashion Week Australia event.

“Douglas Shire will roll out the green carpet for these internationally-renowned designers,” she said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for our local businesses and young models who have an opportunity to get some international exposure.

“There is a sense that there is an eco-revolution upon us and we have two huge environmental assets in the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics to leverage.

“Putting ourselves at the forefront of this means a stronger, more durable and diverse economy that creates genuine employment opportunities and attracts people to our region.”
