Community Recovery Event – Port Douglas
Tropical Cyclone Jasper made landfall last December and the associated weather event that followed had devastating consequences. 3.2 metres of rain was recorded in less than a week and a total of 4.2 metres fell in the space of two months.
The entire Shire was impacted with major flooding, landslips, overnight evacuations, homes destroyed, damage to water infrastructure, and major roads closed for weeks. Massive landslips in catchments caused widespread water outages and these disruptions have continued.
People have lost their homes; many businesses have lost income and employees have lost work. And we face an uncertain tourist season.
To help the community recover, Douglas Shire Council has arranged for disaster recovery specialist, David Younger to visit the region. David is a natural disaster recovery consultant who has worked first-hand with communities throughout Australia over the last 15 years.
Through a blend of storytelling, scientific findings, and real-life experiences, David will talk about common recovery challenges and provide tips and pointers to help people recover better.
