Community Recovery Event – Diwan

Tropical Cyclone Jasper made landfall last December and the associated weather event that followed had devastating consequences.

The entire Shire was impacted with major flooding, landslips, overnight evacuations, homes destroyed, damage to water infrastructure, and major roads closed for weeks.

The lengthy closure of Cape Tribulation Road impacted almost all businesses north of the Daintree River. People lost income and employees lost work. And everyone faces an
uncertain tourist season.

To help the community recover, Douglas Shire Council has arranged for disaster recovery specialist, David Younger to visit the region. David is a natural disaster recovery consultant who has worked first-hand with communities throughout Australia over the last 15 years.

Through a blend of storytelling, scientific findings, and real-life experiences, David will talk about common recovery challenges and provide tips and pointers to help people recover better.
