A FREE National Reconciliation Week Film night will shine light on the importance of reconciliation at the Port Douglas Yacht Club this Saturday Night.

Celebrated Australian Indigenous Actor, and former Mossman High School Captain, Leon Burchill will co-host the evening and share stories of his reconciliation journey.

Indigenous Events Community member and Douglas Shire Council Community Development Officer (First People), Margaret Ross-Kelly, is looking forward to hosting an entertaining evening and driving more awareness around the importance of reconciliation.

“The selected feature films are designed to shine light on real issues, and to get people talking,” she said.

“The evening will commence with a short, yet powerful documentary called Voices From the Cape.  It’s about a team of multi-media trainers who work with a small school in the remote Indigenous Community of Aurukun in far north Queensland.

“This community has suffered hardships most of us can’t comprehend and the film is all about bringing attention to social issues that need to be addressed.  It highlights the importance of engaging young people from at-risk communities.”

“Storytelling is at the heart of the reconciliation message.  Film offers a powerful and engaging platform to make a real difference in educating and inspiriting action.”

“It will be a wonderful way to spend a Saturday night, and I encourage you to come along, grab some free popcorn, a drink from the bar, and get involved in making a difference.”

Port Douglas Yacht Club Manager Sam Leo said he was excited to be part of National Reconciliation Week.

“At the Yacht Club, we’re all about the connection to land and sea. We have a great respect for our First Nations People, and celebrating the importance of their connection to country. We are thrilled to be able to host the event at the Port Douglas Yacht Club, and we look forward to seeing people from across the Douglas Shire turn out in force for this important celebration.”

The screenings will commence from 5:30pm.  The Yacht Club will operate the restaurant and bar for guests to purchase dinner and drinks. Popcorn will be provided.
