Douglas Shire Council and the Douglas Shire Fishing for the Future Working Group were successful in receiving funding from the Queensland Government’s Community Fishing Grants Program 2022 to continue its promotion of responsible fishing.

The projects support the Fishing for the Future Action Plan 2021 -2024 vision of Douglas Shire being the home of an abundant and resilient fishery cared for by the community. The funding will be used to host two free community-led kids fishing day events and to produce an educational fishing flyer.

The first of these free Fishing for the Future with kids day events will be held in Port Douglas on Saturday 13 April 2024 – 8am -12noon and follows on from the success of the 2021 Fishing for the Future Kids Fishing Day. Families are invited to attend for a day of fishing, games, prizes and a BBQ. The fun event will be held in Dixie Park, next to the Port Douglas Boat Ramp.

You don’t need to be a keen fisher to enjoy this event. It is a wonderful opportunity for the whole community to get together with our kids, connect with families and learn some great tips on how to score a catch whilst keeping our fisheries thriving.

Douglas Shire Councillors show their support for the family friendly event.

“The ease with which our kids can fish is enviable, and it is a pastime that many enjoy. It is one of the wonderful things about living in and growing up in this shire. Council participates in many aspects of education and the sustainable and responsible fishing practices that are promoted in this initiative are all part of the vision of Douglas to being a home to resilient and healthy waterways” Cr Noli said.

“Educating and inspiring the Douglas Shires next generation into responsible and sustainable fishing practices future proofs our fishing stocks in a fun, interactive way. It also gets our kids away from their devices and out in nature. This is a great initiative which I fully support,” said Cr Rees.

Registration takes place on the day from 7AM for an 8AM start. Participants will enjoy a fun packed day with catch and release fishing, and games and prizes. Mossman Youth Services will be providing a  Sausage sizzle and drinks, cash only service.

Please wear sun smart clothing and suitable shoes and don’t forget to bring a hat, refillable water bottle and your fishing gear if you have any.

Bait will be provided and a limited number of hand reels available for those who don’t have fishing gear.
