Next week, enough sand to fill the Mossman swimming pool will be trucked from near the Daintree Ferry to Newell Beach as part of emergency beach nourishment works.
Starting Monday, September 30, the transfer of 2000m³ of sand will take place over four days, with trucks operating between 7am and 5pm. During this period, Cyril Close beach access will be closed to pedestrians.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon stated that the additional sand is a short-term solution to Newell Beach’s coastal erosion. “Council is exploring funding options for longer-term remediation works to reduce erosion, but the sand replenishment is an effective short-term solution for the beach,” she said.
“This stockpile of sand, removed from the Daintree Ferry channel, will not only restore the beach’s beautiful appearance but also ensure public safety and protect property,” Mayor Scomazzon added.
Traffic control will be on site to manage the flow of traffic and trucks during the works.
