Douglas Shire Council is inviting residents to nominate exceptional individuals for the 2026 Australia Day Awards, with nominations now officially open.

These annual awards celebrate the contributions of community members across a variety of categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Senior Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Sports Award
  • Junior Sports Award
  • Environmental Achievement Award
  • Arts & Cultural Award

The awards recognise those who have made a meaningful impact through their dedication, service, and achievements within the Douglas Shire.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon encouraged locals to take part in the nomination process and shine a light on those who help make the region special.

“Nominating someone is a great way to celebrate the people who bring energy, kindness and creativity to our community,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

“The awards ceremony at the Port Douglas Community Hall will be a chance to honour those who help make the Douglas Shire a great place to live.”

Nominations close on November 14 giving plenty of time for community members to put forward deserving candidates.

To submit a nomination, visit the Douglas Shire Council website and complete the online form.
