Review of Line Marking at Ashford Street Parking Area

Background

The Ashford Street parking area caters for cars, car and boat trailers as well as motorcycles. There are three rows for cars, 8 motorcycle spaces, 17 spaces for boat trailers, and a parallel rigging zone.

The review found much of the line marking was faded. This meant at times:

  • parked cars and/or parked trailers were encroaching on the traffic lane
  • cars were parked in the car trailer spaces
  • cars were parked across several motorcycle spaces
  • cars were parked in the wash down/derigging lane.

Directional arrows painted on the vehicle lanes to guide the flow of traffic within the parking area were faded. These arrows help vehicles move safely around area, but importantly ensure cars towing trailers are travelling in the right direction to turn into the angle parking spaces.

The review also found the line marking for all the boat trailer spaces was too short to accommodate standard boat trailers, despite there being sufficient room for longer trailers to park, without encroaching on the roadway.

Short Term

As a short-term measure, Douglas Shire Council has renewed the existing lines and additional signs have been installed.

Note, the boat trailer lines have been repainted at the same length. Boat trailers can extend past the T-lines marking parking spaces, as long as the trailers do not hang out over the white line marking the traffic lane.

Future Plans

Douglas Shire Council will be repainting the  arrows on the road, to direct the flow of traffic, and a parking study will be done to identify potential improvements to the area.
