Port Douglas is gearing up for its Carnivale extravaganza and hugely popular glittering family street parade.

‘Tropical Wonderland’ is the theme for this year’s spectacular parade on May 20 and local individuals, community groups and businesses are invited to register their entries now.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said community pride and celebration of the natural environment were at the heart of the Macrossan Street parade, which has again been sponsored by the Property Shop Port Douglas & Mossman.

“We encourage the diversity that reflects life in the Douglas Shire with creative participation by schools, bands, businesses and community organisations, and anyone who wants to dress up and dance in the streets,” Cr Kerr said.

There is also generous prize money on offer – the Best Overall Float will win $2000, Best Business Float $1000, Best Community Float $1000, Best Youth Entry (under 16) $350 and best individual (solo act) $200.

“The real reward is in the collaboration and community spirit at this hugely popular event, so get your team together, organise your best tropical costumes and bling, and register now,” Cr Kerr said.

Last year’s winners included Port Douglas State School, Wildlife Habitat, Mossman Hospital friends of the Foundation, and SweetK (individual).

Sybella Salter, assistant manager at Wildlife Habitat, said staff had a lot of fun with their tongue in cheek, animal-themed float, which also promoted a new ‘swim with the crocodiles’ attraction.

“We decided not to take ourselves so seriously because conservation of wildlife is our priority and we ended up winning the Best Business Float,” Ms Salter said.

“We are thinking of this year’s parade and how we can fit in with the Tropical Wonderland theme and support the community right across Carnivale by getting involved to give back.”

The parade kicks off at 6.30pm, followed by a fireworks display at 8.15pm. Adding to the atmosphere on the night will be the Wonderland Spiegeltent, the Carnivale Fun Fair and food stalls, and Port Douglas restaurants and bars.

Spiegeltent shows and other events will open on May 7 with comedian Akmal’s Best of Akmal.

Parade entries can be submitted online Here and must be registered by Friday, May 13.
