Summary
A key priority of the Far North Queensland Principal Cycle Network Plan 2016 is to connect Mossman township to Mossman Gorge Centre via a shared pathway for pedestrians, cyclists and those using mobility scooters.
This project will be delivered in four stages with the final stage, planned for beyond 2022, to extend the shared pathway through to the Mossman Gorge Aboriginal Community.
Route: This route starts at the intersection of Captain Cook Highway and Johnston Road and finishes at the Mossman Gorge Community.

The Mossman CBD to Mossman Gorge shared pathway will be delivered in four stages:
STAGE 3 – Good Shepherd Retirement Village to Mossman Gorge Centre
Cost of Project
Estimated construction costs for the shared pathway is budgeted at $975,000
Project Overview
Douglas Shire Council will construct a 1.54 km shared pathway connecting Good Shepherd Retirement Village to Mossman Gorge Centre. It will include street lighting, draining and pedestrian crossovers.
Project Updates
- May, 2022 – The contract to prepare detailed design and documentation has been awarded to Trinity Engineering. Over the next two months, we will be talking to key stakeholders to get input into the final design, including an art and cultural element. Documentation will be completed by the end of September, and the tender for construction will be released in October.
We are aiming to award a contract by the end of the year and hope construction can commence early in 2023.
- September 2021 – Application for funds from Round Five of the Federal Government’s Building Better Region Fund were successful.
- January 2021 – Application is currently being prepared for Round Five of the Federal Government’s Building Better Region Fund which closes 5 March 2021. The Federal Government is expected to announce successful applications mid 2021. Under the Building Better Region Fund, Council will need to contribute at least 10% towards the cost of the project.
- November, 2019 – Council applied for Grant Funding of $780,000
- October, 2019 – Detailed design and technical specifications completed awaiting grant funding.
STAGE 2 – Kubirri Aged Care Centre to Good Shepherd Retirement Village including Pedestrian Bridge over Marrs Creek
Cost of Project
Estimated construction costs for a pedestrian/cycle bridge and shared cycleway is $1.15 million.
Project Overview
Council will connect Kubirri Aged Care Centre to the Good Shepherd Retirement Village and residences on Gorge Road with a shared 670-metre concrete pathway with street lighting and drainage.
This stage includes the construction of a pedestrian/cycle bridge downstream of the vehicle bridge. It will be an independent structure, offset from the existing vehicle bridge.

Construction on Stage 1 was completed in June, 2019.
