One person’s unwanted treasure could be another’s perfect find — and this Sunday, Douglas Shire residents will have the chance to discover just that at the Port Douglas Community Garage Sale.
Following the success of last year’s event in Mossman, the garage sale is moving to Port Douglas, bringing together more than 30 local stallholders for a morning of second-hand shopping, family activities and community connection.
Beyond the bargains, the event aims to encourage a more sustainable approach to everyday living by giving unwanted items a second life rather than sending them to landfill.
At the heart of the event is a simple message: “Before you buy new, buy second-hand.” Choosing pre-loved goods can help households save money, reduce waste and make better use of items that are already available.
Families will also be able to enjoy a range of free children’s activities while browsing the stalls. From sensory slime and face painting to building little tents using natural materials and tackling an inflatable obstacle course, there will be plenty to keep young visitors entertained.
The focus on sustainability will extend beyond second-hand shopping, with an organic waste information hub being organised by Resource Recovery Officer Emma Egel.
The hub aims to demonstrate how making use of organic materials can contribute to a healthier community and environment. Featuring chickens, worms and a colouring station, the display will offer visitors an opportunity to learn more about organic waste in an engaging, hands-on setting.
The Port Douglas Community Garage Sale will run from 8am to 12 noon on Sunday, 18 October, at the Port Douglas Community Hall, opposite the Clink Theatre. Visitors are invited to bring the family, browse the stalls and discover how small choices around waste can make a difference.
