AQUA fitness classes, increased usage during winter months and more learn to swim opportunities are all in the pipeline for the Mossman Pool.

Douglas Shire Council has earmarked almost $350,000 worth of improvements at the popular sporting precinct in the 2020-21 Annual Budget.

The facility employs 10 locals and will be managed by Council’s People and Community Services Department in a shift to maximize its benefit to the community.

Sports and Recreation Officer Renee Ker confirmed plans to make the pool an all-abilities facility with improvements earmarked for later this year.

“Changes to include disability access into the pool and a new entrance will make the facilities easier to use for people of all abilities,” she said.

“Those with mobility issues use the pool as a way to exercise without pain or impact, so it is really important to have facilities in which people can get in and out of the pool easily.

“A new face lift to some of the existing facilities will make a big change to the look and feel of the pools facilities.

“We’ll also be creating new picnic-friendly place for families to catch up and cool down during the summer months.

Landscaping works and improvements to the Caravan Park facilities will also be completed.

Council completed a considerable amount of capital works in the 2019-20 financial year to ensure the facility was compliant with Royal Lifesaving Australia standards.

Since Council took over the pool in late 2019, the pool has attracted more than 10,000 attendees.

Various programs have been rolled out to activate the facility such as free aqua fitness classes, family-orientated Dive in Movies, Lane Hire and Learn to Swim classes.

Additional programs are currently being considered including more aqua fitness classes like SUP Yoga, a mums and bubs club and partnerships with off-season sporting clubs as an alternative training option.

Under the 2020/21 Operational Plan, Council staff will also complete a feasibility study to redevelop the Mossman Pool and Caravan Park.

The work will aim to get the project shovel-ready to be a contemporary pool and leisure park so that funding opportunities can be sought.
