Why Register and Microchip Your Dog?
While microchipping and registering your dog is a legal requirement, it’s also the best way to ensure your furry friend is returned home quickly if they ever go missing. Adding a tag with your name and phone number to their collar is also a great idea for extra peace of mind.
- Dogs must be microchipped before registration.
- A vet will implant the microchip and complete a Permanent Identification form—this should be done by 12 weeks of age or before the dog is sold or given away (whichever comes first).
- The microchip contains a unique ID number that links your contact details to your pet, giving lost, injured, or stolen dogs the best chance of being reunited with you.
- Once your dog is microchipped and 12 weeks old, you can easily register them with Council using the below form.

Keep Your Details Up to Date
It’s important to keep your contact details current. You must notify Council if:
- You change address or update your contact information
- You sell or give away your dog (within 14 days)
- Your dog passes away (within 28 days)
- Your pet goes missing (within 72 hours)
- Your dog is declared menacing or dangerous (within 24 hours)
Owning More Than Two Dogs?
- If you plan to keep more than two dogs, or keep dogs for breeding, sale, or showing, you’ll need to apply for a permit from Council.
