Half a tonne of additional recyclable material was collected and the use of yellow bins improved during a new Council monitoring program.
The results of last year’s Bin Tagging program have been released, with an additional 546kg of recyclable material collected in the fortnight after the program. While the increase was largely due to an increase in visitor numbers over Christmas and New Year, the number of properties changing their behaviour was notable.
The use of yellow bins improved by nearly 8% between one bin collection and the next a fortnight later.
During the program, 2625 households had their bins inspected; a green tag was attached if the contents of the bin is acceptable, an orange tag if some items were incorrect and a red tag if the bin was too contaminated for collection.
Four randomly-selected participants – who improved how they used their yellow bins – received a $100 dollar voucher from Mossman Hardware, Divine Beauty in Mossman, Nautical Marine Sales in Port Douglas and “With Sugar” in Port Douglas.
