DOUGLAS Hockey will welcome a new Clubhouse at Coronation Park in Mossman by the end of the month as it gears up for an exciting season in 2021.

Douglas Hockey Association, set up in the Shire in late 2018 by Chairman and former international hockey coach, Greg Mill, has quickly grown to include over 160 members, and over 16 teams.

2021 is shaping up to be the most exciting year yet with the introduction of a Super Sticks program of indoor hockey to take place from mid-Feb to mid-March, new junior teams to be introduced, the introduction of an interschool hockey tournament and Academy program, and the launch of the Cassowary Chicks program for children aged 2-4, to name a few.

Later in the year the Shire will also see the second annual Sandy Sticks and Spokes Hockey tournament held on Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas.  A one-of-a-kind event in Australia, the tournament features the “Deadly Hockey” inflatable hockey pitch – hosting a highly competitive and fun beach hockey comp on the sand, with beach bike races adding to the fun of the weekend.

Chairman of Douglas Hockey Association, Greg Mill said he was thrilled to be delivering such an exciting hockey program in Douglas. “2021 is shaping up to be the biggest and best year yet for Hockey in our Shire,” Said Greg.  “There is growing interest in our game – and it’s great to see our competition expand across all age groups.  It’s such an inclusive sport and we encourage participation from all ages and abilities,” he said.

“We’re particularly excited to launch the Cassowary Chicks program this year giving little ones a fun introduction to the game, and a great social activity for the age group.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr is just as keen to see Douglas Hockey continue to expand and develop as part of an exciting calendar of local community sports, “Greg and the Douglas Hockey Committee have done a terrific job at bringing a new sport to our Shire and setting up an extensive competition in just a few short years,” he said.

“We cherish and celebrate local community sport in Douglas, and Council is thrilled to be able to support Douglas Hockey through our major grants program. We wish all the hockey clubs the best for a fun and competitive season in 2021,” said Mayor Kerr.

Douglas Hockey will host a Family Come and Try Day on March 6th from 10am to 1pm at Mossman Showgrounds.
