Douglas Shire Council and Douglas Shire Fishing for the Future Working Group would like to thank everyone that supported the Free Kids Fishing for the Future Day Event on 13 April in Port Douglas. The event was a great success and would not have been possible without their contributions to the day.
Thank you to The Tin Shed for allowing us free use of True Blue and Peter Wright for skippering the boat and Shawry from Hook up Charters for donating his time and boat to take the kids out fishing. Thank you to Mossman Youth Services for providing the sausage sizzle and drinks, Tangaroa Blue and Volunteer Marine Rescue Port Douglas for setting up displays, Marine Parks for providing educational material, and to Jake from Exceed Sportsfishing and Mossman Boating Fishing Club members (Mick and Ryan) for coming along being fishing experts helping the kids and bring games.
Thank you to Jim and Pat from Mossman Bait and Tackle and Steve from Nautical Marine for supplying the fishing gear and bait for the day. Thank you to Gus from Styledia for being the photographer/videographer on the day.
Thank you to Josh Gibson for helping out with the set-up, pack down and paperwork on the day.
A huge thank you to all the businesses that donated prizes: Jamie Beitzel – On the Daintree Charters, Jake – Exceed Sportsfishing, Norseman, Nautical Marine Fishing Tackle and Chandlery, The Tin Shed and Mossman Boating Fishing Club.
Finally, Thank you to Glenn Shaw from Hook up Charters for giving the kids the best practice fishing talk at the start and end of the event.
The event was made possible by funding received through the Queensland Government’s Community Fishing Grants Program 2022. Another Free Kids Fishing for the Future Day event will be held in the June School Holidays 2024
