Disaster plan ready for cyclone season

The latest version of Council’s Local Disaster Management Plan has been approved.

The plan serves as a framework for the Douglas community’s strategies regarding prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

Douglas Shire Council Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said planning for a natural disaster was critical.

“When disaster strikes, it can catch people unaware, and many who have not had disaster experience may have trouble handling such a high-pressure situation,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

“Everyone needs a plan for what to do if we are threatened by an event. Council has a plan to assist in managing disasters and everyone residing in the Shire needs to know the hazards around where they live and work, and have their own plan on what they will do in emergency situations.  Having a plan that everyone can refer to takes away the question of the how the emergency should be handled.”

DQRA funding for Mossman

Nearly $800,000 in Queensland Reconstruction Authority funding will be used to pay for the Mossman Gorge Road Stabilisation Project.

During Cyclone Jasper, Mossman Gorge Road sustained damage in various areas.

You beauty! Australia Day Award recipients decided

An awards ceremony will be held at the Port Douglas Community Hall on Friday, January 24.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the Australia Day Awards panel chose the recipients from a quality field.

“It was impressive, but not surprising, to find there are so many people giving so much of their time to the Douglas Shire,” she said.

“I look forward to celebrating their efforts in the new year.”

Future secured for Show and Sharks

Mossman and District Show Society and the Mossman Junior Rugby League Club have entered into 10-year trustee leases with Council.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said Council was pleased to endorse the ongoing commitments.

“The leases provide a secure future for two organisations that provide so much enjoyment for our community,” she said.

It’s My Time Fitness for Women has also entered into a formal tenure arrangement with Council for the bottom storey of the Grandstand Building on Grogan Street, Mossman.
