Marine Rescue Queensland’s future secured in Port
The Queensland Police Service, in its capacity as the hosting agency for Marine Rescue Queensland, has now received approval to enter into a 30-year trustee lease with Council.
This lease means that Marine Rescue Queensland can remain at its Wharf Street headquarters until at least 2055.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said Council was pleased to support the organisation.
“Firstly, thank you to all the marine rescue volunteers who roll up their sleeves and come to the aid of our local boaties! I am sure you see a lot of relieved faces onboard and some well-deserved pats on the back once you’ve towed their vessels back to the shore,” Mayor Scomazzon said.
“Port Douglas has been relying on your community service for more than four decades and we gratefully look forward to you continuing your hard work into the future.”
Meantime, the Coral Coast Judo Club has been approved to enter into a 10-year trustee lease with Council. This will formalise its occupancy of part of the Mossman Showground enabling it to continue with its judo classes and fitness program at the facility until at least 2035.

Port tavern set for upgrade
Plans to refurbish a Port Douglas pub have been approved.
The upgrade to the Barrier Reef Tavern would include an extended beer garden and the construction of two, two-bedroom units on the existing second storey.
Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said she was happy to approve the development application on Reef Street.
“Our pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes need to evolve to remain relevant and attract new customers. Council welcomes plans to improve what is already on offer at the Barrier Reef Tavern,” she said.

Networking opportunity for elected members
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon and the other elected members will be attending the LGAQ Civic Leaders Summit in Brisbane next month.
The Summit continues to provide a significant opportunity for Council’s elected members to network with and learn from leaders within the local government arena.
