Overview
Summary
This project will upgrade 1.7 km shared pathway on Port Douglas Road between Lakeland Avenue (Sheraton Mirage Roundabout) and Bale Drive (Barrier Reef Roundabout).
The improvements will create a wider, more accessible route with better alignments and improved sight distances, safely separated from traffic hazards. As has been seen with other pathway improvements in the Shire, the work with encourage pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter users to use the path rather than the road shoulder, significantly reducing the risk of vulnerable road user crashes.
The project targets a Priority A route on the Principal Cycle Network, which sees high volumes of pedestrian traffic, cyclists, and scooter users due to limited public transport options and the area’s significant tourism and local traffic.
Cost
The Port Douglas Principal Cycle Network Project is jointly funded through a combination of Douglas Shire Council and external funding sources. The project has an estimated total cost of $2.57 million and aims to deliver upgraded cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along Port Douglas Road, improving safety, connectivity, and accessibility for the community.
The upgrade to Principal Cycle Network standards reflects our commitment to delivering a safer, more efficient shared-use corridor, accommodating both pedestrians and cyclists. Compared to a standard footpath, the Principal Cycle Network provides increased width, improved alignment, and enhanced crossing treatments to support higher usage and reduce conflict between users.
