Douglas Shire Council is upgrading drainage and constructing a turnaround on Tollgate Road. Following a review of the original proposal, the design has been amended to retain the existing vehicle turnaround arrangement rather than construct a new Y-shaped turnaround facility.
Project Update – amended design
The amended design retains the established route currently used by vehicles to turn around within Tollgate Road.
The design was amended for the following reasons:
- The existing turnaround facility, although not formally designated, is the established route used by vehicles to turn around within Tollgate Road and has operated effectively to date.
- Providing a formal turnaround facility at the end of the street would require disturbance to the existing mature trees and landscaping in this area. Retaining the existing arrangement minimises vegetation removal and disturbance while maintaining the established vehicle movement pattern.
- The proposed arrangement provides a practical and functional outcome while minimising unnecessary disturbance to the existing streetscape, vegetation and established street landscaping.

Drainage improvements
The project will address longstanding drainage issues on Tollgate Road.
Works will include:
- replacing existing road pipe culverts with larger box culverts beneath driveways to improve water flow and reduce road runoff
- reducing the risk of flooding to properties on the eastern side of the road
- reshaping the existing open drainage channel.
Work on individual driveways may temporarily affect property access for several days. Affected residents will receive at least 24 hours’ notice so vehicles can be relocated before access is disrupted.
Driveways and other disturbed areas will be fully reinstated once the works are complete.
When
Construction has been delayed and is scheduled to commence in mid to late October and is expected to take approximately 5 weeks.
Residents will be notified of any works directly affecting access to their properties.
