Temporary Closure – Northern Section [Rex Smeal Park End] – 13 November to 8 December 2023

Douglas Shire Council will be upgrading one of the shire’s most popular walking tracks over the next few months.

Papillon Landscapes has been contracted to complete the work which will start mid-November.

The first stage of the upgrade will be installing 14 new prefab concrete steps on the Rex Smeal Park end of the walking track.

Each step weighs a massive 110 kilograms and the only access is via a steep part of the track.  Each step will need to be manually moved into position and the installation is expected to take seven days.

Once the steps are in place, the contractor will be installing 33 armour rock plates.  These sheets of rock armour will shore up parts of the track which have previously been washed away in heavy rainfall events and flooding. This work is estimated to take two weeks.

While work is underway, the section of track, from where the bottom of the lookout track links to the main path all the way down to Rex Smeal Park, will be closed.  Signs will be installed at all entry points to the walking track.

Further upgrades are planned for the New Year. Details of the next stage of works will be released and plenty of notice provided about any temporary closures.
