Port Douglas Splash Park families could enjoy a coffee, snack or ice cream without leaving Jalunbu Park under a concept being explored by Douglas Shire Council.

Community feedback will determine whether the idea progresses and residents and businesses are encouraged to have their say.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said it was a topic worthy of discussion.

“Council is pleased to see the Port Douglas Splash Park quickly become a destination of choice for young families and the broader community,” she said.

“Introducing food and drink options — whether through mobile vendors or a more permanent offering — has the potential to enhance the atmosphere at Jalunbu Park but it’s important we understand how the community feels about it.”

Mayor Scomazzon said convenience and safety were amongst the issues to be considered.

“As a grandparent, I can appreciate the benefit of being able to access food and drinks without leaving children unattended,” she said.

“On the other hand, people may feel the existing neighbouring outlets Zanders Beach Café and The Surfy, are sufficient.

“Ultimately, this needs to be a community‑led decision. We want to hear from the people who use the park most, as well as nearby residents and local businesses.”

Council is inviting the community to complete a short survey to help determine whether the concept should be explored further.

“We want this to be shaped by the community, so I encourage everyone to jump online and share their views,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

More information and the survey are available on the Douglas Shire Council website <https://douglas.qld.gov.au/have-your-say-food-drink-outlets-at-the-splash-park/> . The survey closes on May 13.
