The Douglas Christmas Street Party, scheduled for this Friday, has been cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Jasper and subsequent heavy rains forecast.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the cancellation was disappointing but the safety of the community was Council’s priority.

“It’s shaping as a challenging week ahead for everyone. By cancelling the party we hope you are able to prepare for the conditions and focus on yourself, family and friends,” Mayor Kerr said.

“I’d also like to thank the volunteers, community groups, stall holders and the Douglas Chamber of Commerce for their efforts to put on the event.

“I know it would have been a success and should return again next year.

“At this stage the Douglas Shire Christmas Carols are going ahead so hopefully we can come together on Saturday night to share some festive spirit.”

Council has also made the decision to close the following services:

Kerbside waste and recycling collection: Bins to be collected on Tuesday 12th December but there will be no kerbside bin service on Wednesday 13th December.

Services will recommence as soon as it is safe to do so. Please put bins somewhere safe to prevent them from being washed away or moved during windy conditions from Tuesday afternoon 12th December.

Council’s Transfer Stations: Killaloe Transfer Station will be closed from 3pm on Tuesday 12th December. Cow Bay Transfer Station will be open on Tuesday 12th December from 8am-12 noon.

All of Council’s Transfer Stations (including Killaloe, Newell and Cow Bay Transfer Stations) will be closed on Wednesday 13th December.
