The Daintree River ferry will be closed from Tuesday afternoon as the shire prepares for Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

The Cairns Harbour Master has activated an extreme weather alert and has instructed the grounding of all vessels.

The ferry will be chained to pylons, with services to be suspended from 2pm tomorrow.

The potential for very strong winds, rising water levels and possible debris moving through the Daintree River would mean operating the ferry would not be safe.

Council will provide an update on the ferry’s reopening date once the cyclone passes.
